Polish is spoken by 38 million Poles in Poland and about 20 million Poles outside Poland. Polish is also spoken in countries neighbouring Poland, by the people of Polish origin for example Ukraine, Slovakia, Bielorus and others. With Poland joining the European Union in May 2004, Polish has become an official language of the European Union.
More and more students are choosing to study in Poland and to learn the Polish language. Globalization, increased business opportunities and the ever increasing numbers of mixed marriages between Poles and other nationalities have resulted in many more people willing to learn the Polish language.
The European Union policy of "one plus two" encourages school children throughout Europe to study at least two other foreign languages beside their native language, which will increase number of students learning Polish.
With changes in Poland, there is a possibility for any person of Polish origin to study in Europe. Polish has become especially attractive for children of Polish origin (second or third generation).
